By now everyone knows who Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.) aka “Dollar Bill” is. The Harvard Law School graduate, former state senator and eight term congressman has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
He faces 16 criminal counts and prosecutors have already said they will seek to recoup hundreds of thousands of dollars from Jefferson. They believe he obtained large amounts of money illicitly by peddling his influence to help broker business deals in Africa.
Recently, Mr. Jefferson pleaded not guilty to the charges he is facing. Two snapshots of damning evidence against him are the $90,000 (cash) in his refrigarator and the visit to his flooded home with the national guard after Hurricane Katrina.
This trial will be explosive and under a national microscope unlike any an elected African American official has experienced.
